Just watched Four Corners on Channel 9, discussing the plethora of speed limits around Sydney (and Australia). What a waste of time.
A whole lot opf people expressed opinions. So what? You can always find someone to express any opinion you want. Doesn't prove anything! Why can't Channel 9 do some research, and present some facts?
I would love to see statistics of accident rates and fatalities before and after introducing various speed limits. I would love to see some justificatiion other that the money that the RTA rakes in. Anyway, if accident rates justify lower speed limits, then why not set the limit to 0kph and have no accidents at all? Or reroute all traffic away from schools?
Personally, I think it is insanity to introduce 40kph limits on main thoroughfares such as Pacific Highway and Pennant Hills road. Far better to ban kids from these busy roads. Anyway, how often do you actually see a schoolkid in the area when crawling along at 40kph?
My quality of driving has dropped remarkably over the last few years, because I am watching my speedometer when I should be watching the road. If there was a kid at the side of the road in a 40kph zone, I wouldn't see him/her - I would be checking my speed. And you can't maintain a steady speed while watching the road, because none of the roads are level, all ups and downs.
There, I've had my rant. I expect its all been said a dozen times before!
Mike
